Market development
We thought the 'Trump Trade' was the main event in October, but it turned out to be just the starter. November brought an emphatic GOP sweep, including a popular vote win, which fueled a continuation of strong US equities, a robust USD, and lagging European markets. Elon Musk worked his magic, turning Tesla's shares into gold with a 38% surge, thanks to his proximity to Trump and an expected favorable regulatory environment. Financials, both old and new, soared on deregulation enthusiasm, with Bitcoin jumping 39%.
Performance explanation
Based on transaction prices, the fund's return was 1.44%. The fund's performance for the month lagged behind the general market, and was slightly behind the investable universe. Our top-performing stocks for the month included Renewi, Williams-Sonoma, Trimble, and Sprouts Farmers Market. Renewi was buoyed by renewed takeover discussions from Macquarie Group, which appears to have secured the support of Renewi's Board. Williams-Sonoma delivered another strong set of earnings and upgraded its full-year guidance for both the top and bottom lines. Trimble also exceeded earnings expectations, and Sprouts Farmers Market continued its stellar run with both top and bottom-line earnings surprises.
Expectation of fund manager
David Thomas
With the US election behind us, we anticipate the market will continue on its current pathway at least until the inauguration, when President Trump's agenda becomes clearer. We expect equity markets to be supported as central banks trim rates and the much anticipated Santa rally takes hold.
