Tracking error ex-post (%)
The ex-post tracking error is defined as the volatility of the fund's achieved excess return over the index return. In fund management, most managers are subject to an ex-ante (pre-determined) tracking error, which defines the extent of the additional risk they may take when aspiring to outperform the fund's benchmark. The ex-post tracking error explains the distribution of past fund performances compared to those of its underlying benchmark. With a higher tracking error, the fund's returns deviate more from its index's returns, hence there is a greater chance that the fund may outperform. The wider the spread of returns relative to the benchmark, the more "actively" a fund has been managed. In contrast, a low tracking error indicates more "passive" management.
15.11
14.52
Information ratio
This ratio serves to evaluate the quality of the excess return a fund manager has achieved because it takes the active risk involved into account. The information ratio is defined as the excess return over the benchmark return divided by the fund's tracking error. The higher the information ratio, the better. For example, a fund with a tracking error of 4% and an excess return of 2% over benchmark has an information ratio of 0.5, which is quite good.
-0.41
0.28
Sharpe ratio
This ratio measures the risk-adjusted performance and allows the performance quality of different investments to be compared. It is calculated by subtracting the risk-free rate from the fund's returns and dividing the result by the fund's standard deviation (risk). So the Sharpe ratio tells us whether a fund's returns are the result of smart investment decisions or stem from taking extra risk. The higher the ratio, the better, meaning that a greater return is achieved per unit of risk. This ratio is named after its inventor, Nobel Laureate, William Sharpe.
-0.13
0.51
Alpha (%)
Alpha measures the difference between a portfolio's actual return and its expected performance, given the level of risk, compared to the benchmark. A positive alpha figure indicates that the fund has performed better than expected, given the level of risk. Beta is used to calculate the level of risk compared to the benchmark..
-5.20
2.49
Beta
Beta is a measure of a portfolio's volatility, or systematic risk, in comparison to the benchmark. A beta of 1 indicates that the portfolio will move with the benchmark. A beta of less than 1 means that the portfolio will be less volatile than the benchmark. A beta of more than 1 indicates that the portfolio will be more volatile than the benchmark. For example, if a portfolio's beta is 1.2 it is theoretically 20% more volatile than the benchmark.
1.44
1.28
Standard deviation
Standard deviation is a measure of the dispersion of a set of data from its mean. The more spread out the data is, the higher the deviation. In finance, standard deviation is applied to the annual rate of return of an investment to measure the investment's volatility (risk).

The fund has sustainable investment as its objective within the meaning of Article 9 of the European Sustainable Finance Disclosure Regulation. The fund furthers the decarbonization of the global energy sector through investments in clean energy sources, energy efficient products and infrastructure and by the electrification of the industrial, transportation and heating sectors. This is done by investing in companies that advance the following UN Sustainable Development Goals (UN SDGs): Affordable and Clean Energy goal, Decent work and economic growth, Industry, innovation and infrastructure, Sustainable cities and communities, and Climate action. The fund integrates ESG (Environmental, Social and Governance) factors in the investment process and applies Robeco’s Good Governance policy. The fund applies sustainability indicators, including but not limited to normative, activity-based and region-based exclusions, carbon reduction target and proxy voting. The benchmark is a broad market weighted index that is not consistent with the sustainable objective of the Sub-fund. The Sub-fund will use the Custom Bloomberg Climate Transition Benchmark to monitor the carbon profile of the Sub-fund. The Custom Bloomberg Climate Transition Benchmark is consistent with the low carbon sustainable investment objective of the Sub-fund. It differs from a broad market index in that the latter does not take into account in its methodology any criteria for alignment with the Paris Agreement on greenhouse gas emission reduction and related exclusions.
Risk management is fully integrated into the investment process to ensure that positions always meet predefined guidelines.

Market development
In October, the global equity market in EUR remained flat as gains accumulated throughout the month were largely wiped out on the final trading day. Market sentiment was heavily influenced by the upcoming US elections, with significant uncertainty surrounding the potential outcome and the possibility of a split government. As election polls and betting platforms indicated an increased likelihood of Trump winning, companies that are expected to benefit from his policies performed strongly, while renewable energy stocks significantly underperformed. Consequently, the dollar strengthened, and long-term yields rose substantially. Additionally, US economic data exceeded expectations, with the Citi Economic Surprise Index nearing a yearly high, increasing the likelihood of a soft landing for the US economy.
Performance explanation
Based on transaction prices, the fund's return was -3.46%. The Energy Efficiency cluster was by far the biggest contributor to the fund's performance, with all subclusters delivering positive returns. The Big Data subcluster saw renewed strong investor interest as Big Tech is set to continue spending on AI. The Energy Distribution cluster experienced a mixed, but overall positive month. The Electric Network subcluster was impacted by higher real rates, while Equipment Suppliers continued to outperform the overall strategy supported by strong earnings from Itron, Schneider Electric and Quanta Services. The Energy Management cluster continued to be impacted by the weak automotive sector and posted a negative return. Energy storage did relatively well as lithium prices seem to be closer to the bottom as some M&A talks sparked in the sector, helping lithium miner Albemarle. The Renewable Energy cluster was the weakest performer in the fund. The market anticipated an increased likelihood of a Trump victory in the US election, which is perceived negatively for renewables due to the potential repeal of parts of the supporting Inflation Reduction Act.
Expectation of fund manager
Roman Boner
Michael Studer PhD
Sanaa Hakim
Inflation in North America and Europe is gradually decreasing and approaching more acceptable levels. However, it might remain slightly above central banks' targets for a while. The Federal Reserve's tightening cycle has likely shifted due to the negative impact of high rates on consumer behavior and growth outlook. The economic data, including the labor markets, show signs of weakening and we believe the Fed is likely to cut rates further in November. The Renewable Energy cluster, which is sensitive to interest rates, still has strong growth prospects over this decade. Power demand growth is likely to accelerate with the need for additional power for AI data centers. The semiconductor sector is nearing a cyclical bottom, with the electric car trend driving semiconductor content. Industrial companies are normalizing supply chains post-pandemic, with high backlogs driving revenue growth.
