Fog and the future: Navigating the challenges of renewable energy!

Fog is an enemy of renewable energies as it means little to no sunshine and wind. This highlights a new challenge — renewable energies are a less constant source of power compared to fossil fuels. Therefore, energy storage has to increase dramatically, be it in the form of batteries, hydrogen or other technologies. Energy storage solutions have come a long way thanks to improved technology and therefore offer more attractive economics. But the best is yet to come. Many current projects for ‘utility scale batteries/energy storage’ are only viable for short-term storage, usually up to four hours. The costs increase exponentially after four hours as battery technology is not yet efficient enough for time horizons beyond that. Longer-term energy storage solutions that use hydrogen, such as hydro-pumped storage power plants, are much more promising.
